For the greater part of its route, the road is carved out of the side of the coastal cliffs, giving spectacular views down to the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the other side up to the towering cliffs above. Because of its winding nature and limited width, the road only carries traffic one way – from Sorrento to Amalfi.

To return to Sorrento it is necessary to take an inland route. The road passes through the village of Positano, which is built on the side of the hill, and where all transport either up or down the hill is only possible on foot. Both the village and the whole drive are leading tourist attractions in the area. The ancient Romans originally built the road. The drive betwwen Salerno, at the southern base of the peninsula and Positano follows the coast for about 80 KM (50 Miles)
